Snapchat is launching a new, consolidated monetization program for creators. This updated initiative aims to compensate creators for content shared on both Stories and Spotlight, its feature modeled after TikTok. Previously, Snapchat operated distinct monetization programs for each format.
Under the new system, creators will earn revenue from ads displayed on eligible Stories and Spotlight posts. The company highlighted, “With Spotlight viewership increasing by 25% year-over-year, there’s a unique and expanding opportunity for creators to monetize this format in the same way as Stories.” Starting February 1, 2025, eligible creators will be able to monetize Spotlight videos that are over one minute long.
To qualify for monetization, creators must have a minimum of 50,000 followers, post at least 25 times per month to Saved Stories or Spotlight, and contribute to either Spotlight or Public Stories on at least 10 out of the last 28 days. Additionally, they must meet one of the following benchmarks within the last 28 days: 12,000 hours of view time, 10 million Snap views, or one million Spotlight views.
Several new eligibility requirements are more stringent than before. Previously, creators needed just 1,000 followers, 10,000 unique video views, and a public profile to earn revenue for Spotlight videos, with no restriction on video length. Snapchat confirmed that the Spotlight Rewards Program will conclude on January 31, 2025.
The announcement comes shortly after TikTok updated its creator monetization program last year to reward longer videos, while YouTube also introduced ad revenue sharing for Shorts creators in an effort to compete with TikTok.
