OpenAI makes ChatGPT available on your landline

ChatGPT is now coming to landlines, not just smartphones. By calling 1-800-242-8478 (1-800-CHATGPT), users can interact with OpenAI’s AI-powered assistant starting Wednesday afternoon.

“OpenAI’s mission is to ensure artificial general intelligence benefits humanity as widely as possible, and part of that is ensuring accessibility for as many people as we can,” said Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s chief product officer, during a livestream. “Today, we’re taking the next step by bringing ChatGPT to your phone.”

The experience mirrors OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode, offering real-time conversations with ChatGPT, though without the multimodal capabilities. Users can ask questions and request tasks like translating sentences into different languages over the phone.

U.S. users will receive 15 minutes of free calling, after which the call will automatically end. OpenAI notes that standard carrier fees may still apply.

Starting Wednesday, ChatGPT will also be available on WhatsApp for those who prefer a text-based interaction. The format remains a simple back-and-forth exchange, lacking the customization features found in the official ChatGPT app.

Similar to the phone version, no account is required for the WhatsApp integration, but users will face a daily usage limit. They’ll receive notifications when nearing this cap, with options to continue via the ChatGPT app or desktop platform.

OpenAI plans to add features like image analysis and web searches to the WhatsApp experience in the future, though no specific timeline was provided.

“This started as a hack week project,” Weil explained. “The team built it just a few weeks ago, and we were really excited about it. They worked hard to bring it to life, and it’s great to see it here. We’re just getting started in making ChatGPT more accessible to everyone.”
