Grammarly hires a new CEO and purchases productivity company Coda

Grammarly has announced its acquisition of productivity startup Coda. As part of the agreement, Coda’s CEO and co-founder, Shishir Mehrotra, will take over as Grammarly’s new CEO. The financial details of the deal remain undisclosed.

This acquisition aims to transform Grammarly’s AI assistant into a comprehensive “AI productivity platform” by incorporating Coda’s AI tools and products. Grammarly users will gain access to new features, including generative AI chat and an enhanced productivity suite, designed to boost efficiency.

Rahul Roy-Chowdhury, Grammarly’s current CEO, shared that he will step down and transition into an advisory role, collaborating with Mehrotra.

Mehrotra, a tech industry veteran with 25 years of experience and a former chief product and technology officer at YouTube, outlined his vision for Grammarly in a blog post. He plans to make the AI assistant more intelligent and useful by integrating it with various systems like email, documents, CRM, and project trackers.

Coda’s flagship product, Coda Docs, will also benefit from integration with the Grammarly Assistant. Mehrotra expressed plans to eventually merge the strengths of both platforms, creating a tool that combines company knowledge, generative AI chat, a full productivity suite, and advanced agents to redefine productivity in the AI era.

Founded in 2009, Grammarly serves 40 million active users and is valued at $13 billion. Meanwhile, Coda was last valued at $1.4 billion after its Series D funding in 2021.

With AI assistants becoming increasingly prevalent, Grammarly’s acquisition of Coda positions the company to better compete with other firms developing AI-driven writing and productivity tools.
