Google announced on Friday that it is expanding the Gemini platform’s advanced research mode to support 40 additional languages.
This feature, introduced earlier this month, is available to Google One AI premium subscribers, offering an AI-powered research assistant. The research mode operates through a multi-step process: it creates a research plan, gathers relevant information, conducts additional searches for further insights, and then compiles a comprehensive report.
Languages now supported by Gemini include Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Danish, French, German, Gujarati, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Malayalam, Marathi, Polish, Portuguese, Swahili, Spanish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Ukrainian, and Urdu.
A major challenge for Google is sourcing reliable content in different languages and summarizing it accurately without grammatical errors. Speaking to TechCrunch in early December, HyunJeong Choe, Google’s director of engineering for the Gemini app, acknowledged issues with accuracy in summaries for languages like Hindi, despite using clean data and trusted sources during training.
Choe explained that the company relies on native data sources and uses Google Search for grounding information. Before deploying the model, Google performs evaluations and fact-checks in native languages. She noted that ensuring factual accuracy remains a significant challenge for generative AI, and the company is prioritizing training the model to use data appropriately.
Jules Walter, Gemini's product lead for international markets, highlighted that the company conducts quality checks from local perspectives by involving native reviewers. These teams also review datasets generated for training to enhance the model’s performance.
Earlier this week, TechCrunch reported that contractors working to improve Gemini were instructed not to skip rating AI responses, even if the prompts fell outside their expertise. Following this report, a Google spokesperson clarified that contractors assess not just the content but also the style, format, and other aspects of the responses.
